Career Coaching is very popular! As the name suggests it is coaching specifically for your career.
The reality is that we will change our career path at least 3 times in our lives. And then we often change the job or role within that career path a number of times too. Is there anything wrong with this? No I don’t think so, so many things have over time and there are many more opportunities for fulfilment and contribution.
Change is inevitable, especially with career, for as we grow and change so do our career skills, experience, insight and interests.
We also learn a lot about ourselves along the way and ideally discover what our strengths, natural behaviours, personal values, communication style and interests are. We are fortunate to live in a society that if we want to, we can find a career that fulfils all of these essentials parts.
What I have found from coaching hundred of clients, is that people change their circumstances due to either inspiration or desperation!
Some clients come to me already inspired and clear about the changes they want, they may have already begun the process and need help to commit to the process of change to ensure they get the end result. In this situation career coaching leverages motivation, creates a realistic plan with timeframes and manages obstacles along the way.
For others by the time they ask for help and engage a coach, they feel their situation is desperate. They are miserable, stressed, drained, lacking motivation and happiness, anxious and feel helpless and stuck in a rut! Unfortunately to add this, it spreads into their personal lives and this also gets affected negatively. All of sudden they stop doing the things that are important for wellbeing such as dropping exercise, not eating well, obsessive thinking, drinking more alcohol, arguing with loved ones etc.
It’s amazing how if one part of our lives is not functioning well, it is only a matter of time for it to affect our thinking and feelings and therefore the other parts of our lives.
A career coach helps in this situation by getting the client to identify exactly what is not working, what is working and what they really want or need and how to get it. From here it is a process of exploration, particularly if they don’t know what they want or how to make the change happen. Career coaching will help you find the clarity and direction you need, to make a plan towards a goal that will ideally fix the things that are not working for you.
Don’t get me wrong it doesn’t mean that the solution will always be to create a new career path, it may be to resolve relationships are work, professional development, change to work hours, change of role, greater stimulation outside of career, communication skills etc. This is the extraordinary value of engaging a Life Coach, that we are skilled to help you holistically, to sort your exact and real issues out!
Often Career Coaching only requires 2 sessions if there are not other main issues, you can decide from there whether you need to continue coaching or not.
